The "Nikollë Zogorjani" High School was founded in 1972 as an agricultural high school. The first headmaster was Pjetër Gjoka, who was assisted by Kolë Vasili that served as his deputy.
The school’s name is a tribute to Nikollë Zogorjani who in 1958 organized the local resistance against the communist regime which shortly after, in 1959, after discovering his activity, sentenced him to twenty-five years of imprisonment. five years of loss of the right to vote and to be elected and with property confiscation. He is a tragic character who, although after the country's democratization processes in the 90s, regained his freedom and engaged in pro-right structures, failed to see the fruits of his attitudes and activity. On December 15th, 1993, an accident took his life. Sometime later, in 1996, the municipality of Velipoja and the District Council of Shkodra perpetuated his name in the high school of Velipoja, which had meanwhile turned from an agricultural high school into a general high school.
The naming of a school after a political activist is explained by the values that his activity has promoted, primarily freedom and democracy that are widely promoted in educational environments such as schools.
From its establishment in 1972 until today, the school has been run by 13 headmasters, including the current one. Currently, the school covers all three pre-university cycles, and every year welcomes students from the 1st grade to the 12th grade. There are also two dependent schools under its jurisdiction: Luarze and Mali Kolaj.
The school building, which had degraded excessively, was reconstructed in 2018 under the auspices of the then Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ditmir Bushati. Thanks to his lobbying, the financial support of Gulf Mining Group from Oman was secured.
The school carefully maintains cooperative relationships with the community, especially with parents, governing structures and non-profit organizations. In recent years, a number of organizations have offered their cooperation, which has been welcomed by the headmasters, teachers and students of the school.
Since last year, the school is part of the national program of schools as a community center.
